Google Chrome OS gets custom wallpaper, cloud saving

Custom wallpapers and the ability to save to the cloud-based Google Drive are among the new goodies in Google's latest update to its Chrome OS operating system.

The updates to Chrome OS' user interface tend to give it the look and feel of a traditional operating system instead of a browser, tech site The Next Web reported.

"While the entire behavior hasn’t changed, Google has today announced a UI update to the OS which makes things feel a bit more like a traditional OS so as to better work with your long-held behaviors," it said.

It said some users had complained that previous versions of Chrome OS was that it felt "a bit too much" like a browser.

Chrome OS is a cloud-centric operating system that requires an Internet connection for many of its apps to work.

The Next Web said the UI update keeps the Apps list in the bottom left, similar to the Windows Start menu.

But it said the size of the list is now more compacted so it will not cover up the browser.

There is also a search box to the top of the Apps list so a user need not open a browser window to start searching.

Aside from custom wallpapers, the updated Chrome OS also allows a user to save files directly to Google Drive.

"The changes are welcome. Though I enjoy using my first generation Samsung Chromebook from time to time there have simply been some limitations that have kept it from being a viable, day-to-day machine. Updates like this bring things closer to parity between Chrome OS and other desktop systems, while still keeping the benefits of a cloud-based OS," it said. — TJD, GMA News
