Grab gives away free rides to UP and Ateneo after heated college basketball finals

Social media is still abuzz over last night’s UAAP men’s basketball finals where the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles became champions once again by beating the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons.

Hopping on the bandwagon is ride-sharing app Grab who last night announced that it is treating both universities to free rides.

“Congratulations to the Ateneo de Manila University! That was one tough #BattleofKatipunan and as a treat, we’re giving both teams free rides! Just use the promo code GRABUAAP for free rides up to P250 to and from any point on Katipunan! #OneBigFight #AtinTwo *T&Cs apply,” the tweet reads.

With the use of the promo code “GRABUAAP,” passengers can get rides worth up to PHP250 (US$4.74) for free when traveling to and from Katipunan Ave.

Both Ateneo and UP — two of the country’s top schools —  are located in Quezon City’s Katipunan area, which is part of why this year’s UAAP men’s basketball finals was so intense.

Defending champs Ateneo went head to head with UP, who entered the league’s final four for the first time in 21 years.

The finals were dubbed “The Battle of Katipunan,” and spun viral memes from both sides.

This netizen hilariously marked which parts of Katipunan belonged to Ateneo or UP. Miriam College, another school in between the two, was labeled a demilitarized zone.

The finals were such a big deal that scalpers sold finals tickets for as high as PHP3,000 (US$56.84) when they’re actually only worth PHP400 (US$7.58).

Ateneo won the championship last night after besting UP in Game 2 of the finals with a score of 99-81.
