MORE legal woes await the seven public officials who were involved in an illegal cockfight in Brgy. Bitoon, Daanbantayan, Cebu on July 25, 2020.
Aside from criminal charges filed by police, the seven public officials will face another set of charges, this time, filed by the Cebu Provincial Government.
In her regular press briefing on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia announced that she will personally file charges against the officials for violating Executive Orders 5-G and 20 that prohibit cockfighting and other gambling activities during the community quarantine period.
“I will personally file the charges since we have a provincial ordinance that prohibits such acts,” Garcia said.
The public officials reportedly involved in the illegal cockfighting in Brgy. Bitoon are Brgy. Maharuhay, Medellin chief Narciso Osabel, Dayhagon, Medellin village chief Arnold Arcipe and Colonia, Tuburan village chief Rodelo Diamante.
Daanbantayan municipal councilor Bernadito Luche, Tuburan town councilor Buena Pontillas and Borbon town councilors Moman Rivera and Abdon Cabahug are also facing charges.
The seven are among the 23 people who were arrested by operatives of the Regional Intelligence Division-Central Visayas after they were caught holding an illegal cockfight in Brgy. Bitoon.
Garcia admitted that she was dismayed by the erring officials as they were supposed to set an example for their constituents and not the other way around.
Garcia said: “When ordinary citizens don’t follow laws and decrees, we punish them. But what is worse is that it’s now the public officials who commit violations. I would like to remind them to remember your oaths of office. Read it, understand it and reflect if you have indeed committed to your oaths.”
Garcia also warned public officials to uphold the law or face the consequences. (ANV)
