A MOTORCYCLE-FOR-HIRE driver died while his passenger was severely injured after they were struck by a pickup truck in Barangay Tal-ot in the southwestern town of Barili, Cebu on Thursday afternoon, November 17, 2022.
The victim was identified as Jose Unabia, a 35-year-old widower from Barangay Cabcaban in the same town, while his passenger was identified as Michelle Parba, a widow from the same barangay.
Valentino Beltran, the 72-year-old driver of the pickup truck who resides in Barangay Banabag in the western town of Pinamungajan, was detained
Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Alpas of the Barili Police Station said the victims were on their way home from Mantalongon while Beltran was headed for the neighboring town of Dumanjug when the accident happened around 3:30 p.m.
Beltran told police he was driving at normal speed when he suddenly lost control of the steering wheel because the road got slippery. His pickup truck skidded and careened across the opposite lane and collided with the victims.
The impact threw Unabia several meters. He landed and got entangled in a barbed-wire fence. Parba, too, was thrown several meters but she was still alive when responders arrived. They rushed her to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City where her condition was listed as critical.
Alpas said the area is accident-prone since the stretch of road is not fully concreted.
He said they’re waiting for the relatives of Unabia and Parba to file formal charges against Beltran.
