A HABAL-HABAL driver died after his motorcycle was hit from behind by a truck around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2022, along the national highway in Barangay Linao-Lipata, Minglanilla town, Cebu.

Jose Remar Libre, 33, a habal-habal driver from Sitio Abuno, Barangay Tungha-an, Minglanilla, was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) at the hospital.

Roger Labaya Unabia, 38, driver of the bulk truck with plate number NAJ 1412 who also hails from Barangay Tungha-an, voluntarily surrendered to police.

Staff Sergeant Junyl Ater of Minglanilla Police Station said in an interview with SunStar Cebu that both vehicles were moving in a north direction with Unabia following the victim on board his Yamaha Mio 125 motorcycle.

During police interrogation, Unabia said he did not notice the motorcycle in front of him, adding he had just found out about the incident after hearing a loud thud at the front portion of his truck and after being notified by some motorists that he hit a motorcycle rider.

The victim died instantly after he was pinned under the truck along with his motorcycle.

Unabia said he was going to Danao City in northern Cebu to deliver coal when the incident took place.

The police believed that Libre attempted to overtake the truck, but lost balance of his motorcycle and fell under the truck.

A case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property is now being readied against the Unabia. (GPL, TPT)
