Hacking incident in Danao City claims life of sidewalk vendor

A SIDEWALK vendor almost lost his head after he was hacked by a neighbor in Sitio Kanlingo, Barangay Sabang, Danao City, Cebu on Sunday night, November 13, 2022.

Rufiniano Pace Cui Jr., 44, suffered a deep cut in the neck as well as hack wounds in the forehead and upper back.

He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police arrested Juanito Hermita Castro, a 59-year-old owner of a vulcanizing shop in the sitio.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Fortunato Ecle Jr., chief of the Danao City Police Station, the victim and the suspect were both drunk during the incident, which took place around 6:20 p.m.

Based on their initial investigation, they found out that Cui was having a drinking session with friends when Castro arrived and confronted Cui.

The two men argued because Cui had scolded Castro’s grandchild and they ended up in a fistfight. However, the people present were able to separate them. Castro then left.

A few minutes later, Cui went to the suspect’s vulcanizing shop and tried to stab the latter with a knife.

Castro was able to parry the attack. Cui lunged at him again but the knife only grazed the suspect’s side.

Castro managed to grab a dagger and hacked the victim several times, nearly severing the latter’s head.

After they arrested Castro, police recovered from him the dagger which they estimated to be at least 18 inches long. (GPL)
