MANILA, Philippines – House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez got very upset after Land Transportation Office Chief Edgar Galvante failed to attend the House Committee hearing earlier Wednesday.

During the hearing, various issues such as fast tracking the process on motor vehicle registration and car plates backlogs were tackled.

It was said that Asec. Galvante was not able to attend the hearing because he was in the hospital for medical treatment.

House Speaker Alvarez would have wanted to ask the LTO Chief about the status of almost 6 million backlogs on vehicle plates.

The agency was able to send a representative from the Chief Operations Division, but the official failed to give a clear answer to the House Speaker’s questions.

This got Alvarez really angry to the point of calling for Galvante to resign from his post for his slow action to address the problem of car plates backlog, despite of being 1-year in office.

“What are you doing there? If you cannot do your job you resign! You tell Asec. Galvante if you cannot do your job tender his resignation.  Hindi kaya. Mahigit isang taon na kayo dyan wala pa rin kayong plaka (You can’t handle it. You’ve been there for more than a year yet there are still no car plates),” Alvarez said.

Based on the statement released by the LTO Wednesday afternoon, the agency said that they have already issued the notice of award to the winning bidder, Trojan Computer Forms Manufacturing Corporation and J.H. Tonnjes E.A.S.T. GMBH & Co. KG Joint Venture for the production of the almost 6 million backlog on car plates amounting to more than P900-million.

The House leader also questioned the alleged slow process of imported motor vehicle registration, due to various requirements, such as the permit from the PNP-HPH Traffic Management Group and a clearance from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which he said are unnecessary.

“Katarantaduhan yang mga requirements (Those requirements are foolish). Pinahihirapan niyo taumbayan (You’re burdening the people),” Alvarez said.
