iPhone 7 may sport a Samsung chip

Apple may be a bitter rival of Korea-based Samsung on the mobile front, but maybe not that bitter after all: Samsung's chips may be used to power the iPhone 7.

The iPhone maker is tapping Samsung to supply mobile application processors - the brains of the iPhone - from 2015, Korea's Hankyung.com said.

"Samsung Electronics will supply 14 nano A9 chips that will be used for Apple's iPhone 7," the report added.

Citing industry sources, the site said Samsung Electronics signed an agreement with Apple July 14 to supply the next-generation processors it will produce in 2015.

The processors will be produced using a 14-nano FinFET technology, and may be used in the iPhone 7 slated for release in the second half of 2015.

While Samsung supplied processors to Apple since 2007 - when the iPhone debuted - it lost the supply contract for the then next-generation A8 chips to Taiwan's TSMC.

Samsung and Apple had tangled in patent disputes with Apple at the time.

But now, Hankyung.com said Samsung Electronics had developed state-of-the-art 14-nano models ahead of TSMC, allowing it to regain the order from Apple.

Earlier, Apple excluded Samsung memory chips, including mobile DRAMs, from its iPhone 5, which was released in September 2012.

Apple also decided to procure iPhone 6 APs from TSMC. — TJD, GMA News
