THE more than P1 million worth of illegal drugs confiscated in Cebu City Jail did not sit well with Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella.

Labella said the result of the greyhound operation was "alarming."

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology confiscated illegal drugs worth P1.08 million in a greyhound operation at the male dormitory of the Cebu City Jailearly Thursday morning, May 6, 2021.

Apart from the illegal drugs, the police also seized contraband and firearms, including a .45 caliber pistol, its magazine assembly and live ammunition, cell phones, sharp weapons, and cigarettes, which are all forbidden inside the City Jail.

Labella warned to stop the cash allowance given to Cebu City Jail personnel should the smuggling of illegal drugs and contraband continue.

The mayor also directed Cebu City Attorney Rey Gealon to conduct an inquiry on the matter.

He said the City has to intervene to find out if there is a "collusion or conspiracy" between the inmates and the guards.

Labella said proper administrative and criminal charges will be filed if the allegations are proven to be true. "I cannot tolerate that if that continues," said Labella.
