Javi Gomez de Liaño to play in Japan’s B.League

University of the Philippines Fighting Maroon and Gilas Pilipinas wingman Javi Gomez de Liaño has signed on to play for the Ibaraki Robots in Japan’s professional basketball league -- the B.League.

The development means that Gomez de Liaño will get to play in the same league that his younger brother, Juan Gomez de Liaño, plays in. Gomez de Liaño’s addition to the Robots is the team’s latest move in its bid to compete for the Division 1 crown after it was recently promoted from B2 where it finished in second place.

This will also mean that Gomez de Liaño will be foregoing his final year of eligibility for the Maroons in the UAAP. In his final season for UP, the 6-foot-5 wingman averaged 10.5 points, three rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game as the Maroons finished the Season 82 in third place.

His stellar performance in the UAAP eventually led to a Gilas call-up for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. There, Gomez de Liaño played in three games and normed 10.7 points and three boards per outing.

There are now three Filipinos playing in Japan’s B.League. Aside from the Gomez de Liaño brothers, former Ateneo wingman Thirdy Ravena is playing for San-En while his older brother, Kiefer, has signed on to play for Shiga. (JNP)
