RJ JAZUL caught fire from beyond the three-point arc, as he drained nine triples to help lead the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters past the defending champions San Miguel Beermen, 110-103, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Thursday, November 5, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.
Jazul was simply phenomenal from rainbow country as he drained five three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including three in a row at the halfway point that helped give Phoenix a good grasp of the lead en route to winning their sixth game in nine games while also putting a stop to San Miguel’s four-game winning run.
The Letran product finished with a career-high 33 points, while Jason Perkins added 27 points and 10 rebounds.
RR Garcia chipped in 11, while Matthew Wright, the league’s leading scorer, had a muted evening and had just 10 points but distributed the ball well and ended up with 10 assists. Calvin Abueva failed to reach double-figures as he had just seven points but added 10 boards and five assists.
Up by just two, 89-87, Jazul came alive and made three straight trifectas to counter San Miguel’s own three-point barrage and give Phoenix a 98-93 lead, 5:14 to go in the game.
The Beermen pulled to within three after Alex Cabagnot made a layup but Wright scored on a tough drive before assisting on another Jazul triple that gave the Fuel Masters a 105-97 lead with just 1:51 remaining.
Mo Tautuaa led San Miguel, which dropped to 5-3, with 21 points, while Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter put up 20 points apiece. (JNP)
