FORMER world title contender Melvin Jerusalem starts sparring for a possible fight in December.
Jerusalem recently returned to Cebu from his hometown of Bukidnon to reunite with his coach Michael Domingo.
Jerusalem got his first taste of sparring and went a few rounds with another fellow former ALA Boy in Michael Romarate.
“He’s big and has power. I got stunned a couple of times but I can see his punches. He’s strong,” Jerusalem told SunStar Cebu. “I want to get used to sparring with bigger fighters.”
Jerusalem, Romarate, Jeo Santisima and Domingo got invited by four-division world champion Donnie Nietes and coach Edmund Vilamor at the Gladiator Fitness and Boxing Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020. Jerusalem sparred with Romarate, while Santisima went a few rounds with Nietes.
“Right now, not yet. But soon I will be sparring with him (Nietes),” he said.
According to Jerusalem, he might be seeing action in a card promoted by his new promoter and handler, Sanman Promotions and ZIP Management, probably in late December either in Cebu or General Santos City. He said Santisima, Romarate and Esneth Domingo will most likely be fighting also in the same event.
The 26-year-old Jerusalem hasn’t fought for more than a year. He last saw action on Aug. 17, 2019, wherein he stopped Reymark Taday at the Superdome in Ormoc City.
Jerusalem is still one of the top 105-pound fighters in the world. He’s rated No. 1 in the World Boxing Council, No. 4 in the International Boxing Federation, No. 6 in the World Boxing Organization and No. 9 by the Ring Magazine. (EKA)
