Little Mix's Jesy Nelson has opened up about her mental health struggles, admitting that the trolling she got online after winning the X Factor lead to her starving herself in an attempt to lose weight.
The 28-year-old, whose documentary Odd One Out is released tomorrow (12th September) has spoken candidly about the suffering she went through. In an interview with Glamour, she admitted that the constant comparison to her bandmates led to suicidal thoughts. "I just wanted to be Jesy, I didn’t want to be Jesy the fat one," she said. "I wanted people to see me as normal, so I punished myself.
"I starved myself. If I did eat, I hated myself. I’d punish myself and make sure I didn’t eat for four days."
In a clip from the documentary released earlier this week, Jesy revealed that at one point she was so affected that she attempted suicide. "I just remember thinking this is never going to go. I’m going to constantly wake up and feel sad for the rest of my life. So what is the point in being here? I physically couldn’t tolerate the pain any more.
"I laid in bed for ages and kept thinking, 'Let it happen. Hurry up'".
Sharing a trailer from the documentary on Instagram, she wrote: "So this is it guys! Here is the official trailer for my documentary #oddoneout which is airing this Thursday at 9pm on BBC 1, and on BBC Three iPlayer.
"I've gone on such a journey since filming started and met some of the most inspirational people. I can't wait to finally share it with the world and hope that it helps other people who might be going through what I did. ❤️"
