SHOWING that the apple certainly did not fall far from the tree, Jhoernel Tangkay sank a difficult three-pointer with just three seconds remaining to lift the Lapu-Lapu City Pantum past the Sealcor Cagayan de Oro Kingfishers, 95-94, in the Pilipinas Super League 21-Under VisMin Leg on Wednesday night, August 3, 2022, at the Cordova Sports Complex.
Tangkay -- the son of Cebuano hoops legend Jojo Tangkay -- is slowly making a name for himself as he calmly brought the ball past halfcourt and leaned into a triple that hit nothing but the bottom of the net, capping off Lapu-Lapu’s furious rally from a six-point deficit with 1:21 to go in the game.
Jeco Bancale led Lapu-Lapu in scoring with 29 points, six rebounds, six steals, and three assists, while Tangkay finished with 24 points, five dimes, and four boards to help the team improve to 2-4.
Cagayan de Oro dropped to 4-2. The loss wasted the masterful game of Paul Redondo who had 25 points, 19 rebounds, six steals, and four assists.
Things looked bleak for Lapu-Lapu as they trailed, 86-92, with 1:21 to go. But a triple by Tangkay and free-throws from the latter and Bancale quickly tied the score at 92-all. Free-throws by Josef Usman and Angelo Mercado gave CDO a slim 94-92 lead with eight seconds to go, setting the stage for Tangkay’s game-winning triple.
In the second game, the Davao Occidental Dreamers clobbered the Bogo City Bugoys, 87-65. Christian Malano had 16 points while Rainier Maga added 11 to give the Dreamers their fifth win in six matches.
Bogo City remains winless at 0-6. (JNP)
