Over the summer the BBC announced details of their new anthology series, Small Axe, starring John Boyega and Letitia Wright, which has reportedly been in the works since 2014. The series, is directed by industry icon Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community from the late 1960s onwards.
The first episode in the series, Mangrove, aired last night on the 15th November and already fans are taking to twitter to give their reactions to the show.
Here's everything you need to know about the show, plus the best fan reactions to the first episode.
What is Small Axe about?
Small Axe is an anthology drama which tells five different stories from within the West Indian community in London in the 1960s and 1980s. Boyega's episode is called Red, White and Blue and tells the story of real life police officer Leroy Logan, who worked to combat racism within the Metropolitan Police after seeing his father assaulted by two police officers.
Leroy Logan became a public figure for his work and was awarded an MBE in 2001 for his role in developing anti-racist policies for the police. He recently tweeted his support of the upcoming show, saying "Never in my wildest dreams would I’ve thought my life story would get to the attention of film director Steve McQueen... You couldn’t make this up & I’ve had to pinch myself".
The series' other episodes are titled, Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Alex Wheatle and Education.
On 15th November the first episode, Mangrove, aired on BBC 1, and the reaction was huge, with viewers praising the show for its crucial subject matter and for the quality of the acting.

#Mangrove shows how the court system, the law, counsel, MPs and local councils...even a doctor that gave evidence at trial were complicit in multiplying the harm they were exposed to. Often by "following procedure" against a background of obviously racist policing #SmallAxe
