Jollibee's Chickenjoy declared 'best chain fried chicken in America'

We know Filipinos love our home-grown fast food chain, Jollibee. But do people elsewhere love Chickenjoy as much as Filipinos?

Well, Jollibee was pitted against various fried chicken chains that operate in the United States by American food website Eater.com. The result was resounding: Jollibee's Chickenjoy was declared the "best chain fried chicken in America".

Eater enlisted its staff in judging and comparing 16 fast food brands, both local to the US as well as international.

In the final round, Jollibee Chickenjoy beat Bonchon's fried chicken topped with soy garlic sauce and gochujang sauce, in a one-to-one contest decided by Eater's special projects editor, Lesley Suter.

Suter praised Chickenjoy for its "tectonically crunchy" skin that was "subtly seasoned". She added that the chicken was "satisfyingly light, flavorful in a ‘tastes like chicken’ sort of way, and supremely moist.”

Suter also acknowledged Jollibee's signature gravy, describing it as "more than just an optional dunk; it completes the dish, gelatinous in a way I can only describe as naughty, while proudly showing its Filipino colors with a hefty dose of sugar."

"On its own, the gravy is unremarkable bordering on weird," Suter added. "But slathered on a bite of Chickenjoy, the sweetish gravy brings out a whole other realm of flavor – bright, tangy, rich. It’s the chicken’s perfect complement.

Jollibee Group’s President for Philippine Brands in North America, Maribeth dela Cruz, said, "We are honored that our beloved Chickenjoy has been named as among the best fried chicken in the US. Jollibee made its US debut in 1998 and has since developed a cult following for its chickenjoy as well as its meat-topped spaghetti, although the pasta dish was not a judging factor in Eater's tests.

The Filipino fast food chain currently has 83 locations in North America and more than 1,500 restaurants worldwide.
