Journey to Recovery hands Fighter 50 Wine first loss in Mayor Labella hoops

JOURNEY to Recovery (JTR) punched its ticket to the semifinals with a 95-74 shellacking of the erstwhile unbeaten Fighter 50 Wine in the final day of the elimination round of the Mayor Edgar Labella Christmas Inter-Commercial Basketball League at the Cebu City Sports Institute on Friday, December 20, 2019.

JTR took control of the game in the second canto where they outhustled F50, 28-17, to build a 52-37 lead. F50 tried to cut into JTR’s lead but the latter held their ground to pick up their third win in five games, and bring the former’s record down to 4-1.

Steve Castro led the way for JTR with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists while former Cebu Shark, Ian Ortega, had 19 points. Former University of the Visayas big man Jayson Balabag also helped out by pitching in 16 points.

Two more teams also booked spots in the semifinal round which will be played on Saturday night, December 21.

ASPA Frameworks downed KCS Lapu-Lapu, 92-83, while the SG ARQ Builders nipped the Siargao Wave Riders, 55-45, in a very low-scoring affair.

Russel Moneva led ASPA with 27 points, four boards and five assists while Joseph Cabahug registered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rexson Moneva and Anthony Linao had 14 markers apiece.

Meanwhile, Rino Berame was the lone player to score in double-figures for SG with his 11 points and eight boards.

Fighter 50 Wine will be taking on ASPA at 7 p.m. while SG ARQ battles JTR at 8:30 p.m. The winners of those games will be advancing to the finals on Sunday evening. (JNP)
