While the San Miguel Beermen could not come away with a win in his first game back from a fractured tibia, Cebuano basketball star June Mar Fajardo still found something to be happy about as he expressed gratitude for being given another chance to play basketball.
Sidelined since February 2020 because of the leg injury he suffered in practice, the 6-foot-10 gentle giant from Pinamungajan in Cebu played 18 minutes in the Beemen’s 87-93 loss to the Meralco Bolts on Sunday. Afterwards, the University of Cebu product shared how grateful he was to just be on the court once again.
“Masaya ako na nakapaglaro ulit ako. And thankful ako kay God na nabigyan ulit ako ng second chance na makalaro ulit ng basketball,” said Fajardo.
It’s been almost two years since Fajardo last played in the PBA. In fact, his last appearance in an official game happened way back on November 24, 2019, when he played in the Governors’ Cup quarterfinals against Barangay Ginebra. After being away for so long, it was only natural that Fajardo felt tentative in his first few minutes on the floor.
“Wala pa ako sa rhythm nung first half. Medyo tentative pa ako,” said Fajardo. “Pero nakuha ko rin naman later.”
However, Fajardo added he expects to get better as the season chugs along.
“Bounce back na lang kami next game,” he said. “Pero happy ako na nakabalik ulit ako sa game.” (JNP)
