Filipino basketball prodigy Kai Sotto arrived in Manila on Monday night to join the Gilas Pilipinas.
The 7-foot-3 center, who recently signed to play for the Adelaide 36ers in the Australian National Basketball League, will have to undergo a mandatory two-week quarantine, thus placing his availability for the Gilas in the upcoming third leg of the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers on June 16 in Clark, Pampanga in doubt.
“Depende na sa ano kung may mababago pa, pero ako, kahit anong mangyari, stay ready pa rin ako maglaro kahit kailan pa yan na nandito ako sa Pilipinas,” Sotto reportedly said to the press.
While his participation in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers remains uncertain, Sotto has his eyes set on helping the Gilas in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia on June 29 as he shared that he’ll be staying in the Philippines until he leaves for Australia in August.
Although Sotto is no stranger to playing for flag and country owing to his time playing for the Batang Gilas, the 19-year old said he’s excited to join the Gilas men’s national team.
“First time ko na makakalaro sa national team Sobrang excited. Hindi ako makapaghintay na makasama yung team.” (JNP)
