Who is the "Kara King"?

23 Jun – Malaysian director Namewee has begun production for his third film, titled "Kara King", which will mark his first steps towards building an appeal to a regional audience.

Firstly, the film is set to be the director's largest project to date, with expected production costs to exceed more than RM3 million, as principal shooting would be taking place in Malaysia, China and Hong Kong.

Secondly, the musical comedy brings popular Taiwanese singer Gao Ling Feng and Hong Kong veteran actor Ng Mang Tat together onscreen for the first time in their lead roles as rivals in singing and love.

"This is a heart-warming story about how music can be a medium to bridge the gap between a father and his son, and I'm very honoured to have one of my all-time favourite actor Ng Mang Tat to act as my father in this film," said Namewee during a prayer ceremony to launch the production.

Namewee would be playing as the son of Ng's character who is at odds with his father due to their different musical tastes.

Namewee has also managed to string together a musical ensemble of local singers Zhang Sao Long, Yao Yi, Xiao Hei and two new artists Iris Woo and Ribbon Ooi for his film. In addition, Canadian actor Christopher Dawns will be making a guest appearance while a secret artist would play the role of Namewee's mother.

According to producer Fred Chong, shooting is planned to be completed in Malaysia by July before it moves to Guangzhou, China and Hong Kong.

"This is the biggest production for our projects to date, so we really hope to bring a top quality movie production that Malaysians can be proud of," said Fred.

He added, "Namewee's "Nasi Lemak 2.0" has been selected by international film festivals including being awarded 'Best Asian New Director' in Osaka, as well as Taipei Golden Horse, Okinawa Film Festivals and more recently New York Asian Film Festival and Puchon Korea Film Festival, so we believe "Kara King" will open more regional opportunity for Malaysian film to be shown on the international market."

No release date has yet to be set for "Kara King", only that it will be released during 2013's Chinese New Year holidays, suceeding the release of Namewee's second film "Hantu Gangster" this 16 August.
