Kate’s new fashion formula is simple, chic and perfect for winter

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Or so the saying goes. And the same goes for style formulas. The Princess of Wales has honed hers over the past few months, and her latest outfit is no exception.

Kate, 41, visited Foxcubs Nursery in Luton on Wednesday afternoon wearing one of the most hardworking style combinations in her arsenal: coordinating knitted separates under a classic winter coat. She has reached for this formula time and time again for public appearances lately, proving that once you understand a style that works for you, run with it.

The colour combinations may change, but the underlying formula remains: a knitted, often turtle-neck style, long-sleeved top, with a slightly flared A-line midi-length skirt, in the same colour and knit.

The look – which is sometimes an all-in-one knitted dress – is pulled together with a leather belt at the waist, grounded by knee-high heeled boots and topped with a classic-shaped long coat.

The mother-of-three visited the top-rated childcare and early education centre in Luton in her first solo appearance since the release of Prince Harry's bombshell memoir.

She wore a vibrant burnt orange-coloured rib-knit twin set by Gabriella Hearst and her Massimo Dutti £349 cashmere wool camel coat, accessorising with her Gianvito Rossi brown suede boots, a Stuart Weitzman brown suede clutch and Kiki McDonough citrine pear drop earrings.

Each element of Wednesday’s outfit came from Kate’s existing wardrobe, proving yet again that once you find a style formula that works for you, you can rewear to your heart’s content.

For her and Prince William’s first engagement of the year, Kate paired her Cefinn Eva Blouson sleeve merino knit dress in black (£290) – which ticked all the formula boxes with its rib-knit fabric, midi length, and mock neckline – with her green and navy checkered Holland Cooper double breasted coat in “Blackwatch” (£749), for yet another example of why the style works.

But it's not just a recent thing, the Princess of Wales has had the style formula at her fingertips for months.

She stepped out in a tonal look in November, complete with beige knitted dress, waist belt and matching camel coat; and even her Christmas Day outfit fit the formula to a tee with its £35 knitted dress and custom coat.
