KAYA FC-Iloilo has loaded up on their midfield after signing Japanese-American midfielder Ryo Fujii for the upcoming 2021 Philippines Football League (PFL) season and the club’s upcoming preliminary stage match in the Asian Football Confederation Champions League.
The 24-year-old Fujii played one season of NCAA Division I football with the University of California (UC) Santa Barbara in 2014. He made his pro debut with the second division squad of the LA Galaxy in 2015. After two years with the LA Galaxy II, Fujii transferred to Nyöpings BIS of the third tier Swedish league.
Fujii was supposed to play in the PFL after being signed by Global FC in 2020 but after failing to pay its players the club was banned from Philippine pro football.
Fujii is the club’s newest acquisition along with former Stallion Laguna FC stars Jhan Jhan Melliza and Fitch Arboleda.
Kaya FC has retained the services of Jovin Bedic, Eric Giganto, Daizo Hirokishi, Dylan De Bruycker, Kenshiro Daniels, Marwin Angeles, Arnel Amita, Masanari Omura, Carlyle Mitchell, Simone Rota, Audie Menzi, Camelo Tacusalme, Louie Casas and Zach Banzon.
Kaya FC will be up against Aussie club Brisbane Roar in a one-match elimination in the AFC preliminary stage that’s yet to be determined. The winner of the preliminary stage moves up to the play-offs and then to the group stage.
Meanwhile, the PFL will kick off the 2021 season in July. (EKA)
