Kidnapping hoaxes alarm cities of Carcar, Danao

THE series of fake kidnapping reports that went viral on social media these past few days has alarmed the cities of Carcar in southern Cebu and Danao in northern Cebu.

The Carcar City Police Station advised the residents to report the matter directly to police and not through Facebook, especially if they know that somebody in their community went missing or being kidnapped so as not to create panic among the public.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Ardioleto Cabagnot, chief of Carcar City Police Station (CCPS), said they are now tracing the source of the fake social media post.

The CCPS shared the Facebook post of a certain Kylie Mae Alido, who said: "Taga Carcar, please be aware mo ani nga sakyanan YW salamaaat sa akong mga classmates nga alerto kaayu wala gyud tawon ko madala."

The CCPS announced in their Facebook page that corresponding penalties await those responsible in posting “fake news” on social media.

The City Government of Danao also advised its residents to be careful and be watchful of their surroundings amid the spate of kidnapping incidents posted on social media recently that turned out to be a hoax. (ANV, TPT)
