La Union Now Under State Of Calamity Due To Floods

AN FERNANDO CITY, La Union - Local officials of La Union had declared the province under a state of calamity following the devastating effects of typhoon "Helen" and the habagat (southwest monsoon) which flooded at least 13 towns.

This develop as the members of the La Union provincial board passed a resolution during their session presided by Vice Governor Aureo Nisce last Thursday declaring the province as under the state of calamity.

In a report released yesterday by La Union's Public Information Officer Adamor Dagang, it was stated that the La Union provincial government assured the giving of assistance to the victims of the recent typhoon and monsoon rains.

An initial report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) showed that at least 18,000 families had been displaced by heavy flooding as a result of weeds of severe weather conditions.

Dagang said the report is still considered partial and that among the hardest-hit areas were the towns of Caba, Luna, Bangar, and Aringay.

He said Capitol officials and some private institutions have already given emergency relief assistance to the victims in the amount of around R735,000. Dagang said that the assessment on damage to agriculture, fisheries and infrastructure wrought by typhoon Helen is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, latest reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council showed that Region 1 absorbed R57.54 million in damage to private and public property as well as agriculture.
