Labella: Hospitals ‘no place’ for patients with mild symptoms

PATIENTS who test positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) but experience only mild to moderate symptoms should head to quarantine centers provided by the Cebu City Government instead of going directly to hospitals.

Mayor Edgardo Labella made this reminder after receiving reports that the number of admissions of Covid-19 patients rose.

“Those patients who are mild to moderate symptomatic, we have quarantine centers that can accommodate them,” he said. “They are advised not to go directly to the hospitals so our hospitals will not be overwhelmed,” he added.

Labella said the quarantine facilities in the city are open and can accommodate them.

These are the Cebu City Quarantine Center at Block 27, North Reclamation Area; the Bayanihan Cebu IEC Field Center on Pope John Paul II Ave.; and the old Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu campus on Gen. Maxilom Ave.

Labella urged Covid-19 positive patients, especially those on home quarantine, to contact their barangay health workers or the City Health Department so their situation can be assessed.

They can also contact the City’s Covid-19 emergency hotline at 0947-178-000/ 0947-178-9999/ 0932-537-7770/ 0923-524-8222 or they can dial (032) 262-1424.

Labella said hospitals should only accommodate those with serious to severe conditions, so as not to overwhelm health care facilities.

“Some patients would like to go directly to the hospitals, especially to private hospitals. But the protocol is we have the quarantine centers,” he said.

Labella understood that some patients may be afraid that is why they go directly to hospitals, but he said quarantine centers intended for symptomatic patients are also equipped.

In a press conference on June 11, 2020, Department of Health-Central Visayas Director Jaime Bernadas said hospitals are expanding their capacity to accommodate Covid-19 patients. (JJL)
