CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella has tasked City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. to lead the operation to safekeep the homeless people.
The local executive made the decision after noticing several street dwellers sleeping on sidewalks and skywalks, and these people have put themselves at risk of contracting the coronavirus disease 2019 as they do not wear masks and neglected social distancing.
Labella believes that the Christmas season has contributed to the influx of street dwellers, who often beg for food or money.
The mayor described the sight of the homeless people as “hugaw,” or ugly.
Casas will be assisted by the personnel from the Cebu City Police Office, Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), Cebu City Anti-Mendicancy Office, the Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) team and barangays.
The street dwellers who came from Cebu Province will be given assistance and they will be sent back to their hometowns.
As to the Cebu City residents, they will be sent back to their homes. If they do not have homes, they will be housed in a facility.
Labella told Casas to find a halfway house for the homeless people.
The DSWS will evaluate and profile the street dwellers before giving them assistance.
As to the rescued street children, the personnel from the DSWS and anti-mendicancy office will check if their parents have liabilities. (PAC / KAL)
