CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella is still confined in the hospital while recovering from pneumonia.
His condition is “slowly improving,” Cebu City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. assured in an interview on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.
He said Labella has extended his medical leave of absence until Friday, July 23.
By Friday, Casas said City officials will discuss the mayor’s condition with his physician again to determine whether he can go back to work.
In a previous press conference, Casas said Labella was hospitalized on July 13 due to persistent cough.
Labella was supposed to go back to work on Monday, July 19, but he extended his medical leave on the advice of his doctor.
“He is not yet fit to go back to work so his doctor advised him to just stay in the hospital for more days,” said Casas.
This is now Labella’s fifth medical leave this year.
He first took a medical leave in January for an ear infection.
On May 31, he took a three-day leave after he was hospitalized for “slight pneumonia.”
On June 9, he took a three-week leave to fully recover from sepsis.
When asked if Labella is suffering from other ailments, Casas said he was aware only of the pneumonia.
Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama has assumed the duties of acting mayor based on the appointment papers he received on Monday, July 19. (JJL)
