LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan said Tuesday, July 5, that he supports the call to suspend the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) that is scheduled to happen on December 5, 2022.

In a news forum Tuesday, Chan said having two elections in one year will be too expensive for the government since the country is still suffering from the effects of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

"We cannot afford to do (two) elections in one year. That is very expensive, especially right now, we are facing the pandemic... Grabe ang kwarta nga nang gawas," said Chan.

Ferdinand Gujilde, regional election attorney of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Central Visayas, said that only an act of Congress can suspend the BSKE.

Gujilde added that the Comelec is only doing its mandate since there is a law that specified the schedule of the BSKE.

The BSKE can be rescheduled by Congress, unlike the national and local elections, which have fixed dates as stated in the Constitution.

"Ang amo gyud mindset is madayon siya but if Congress would later say that it would reset, then we have no other choice but to abide," said Guijilde. (IRT)
