LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan is set to seek the help of 10 senators to fund the city's P367 million worth of infrastructure projects this year.

This, after the City Council passed in mass motion the 10 resolutions endorsed by 10 councilors that seek financial assistance from the senators during their special session on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

The City Government is eyeing to construct multi-purpose buildings, classrooms, road asphalting, diversion road, road improvement and drainage rehabilitation, access road, evacuation center, and pedestrian skywalks.

Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, who chairs the committee on finance and appropriations, told SunStar Cebu that the City Government sought the help of the senators due to lack of fund source.

In a report of the city's Public Information Office, Chan will personally bring the approved resolutions to the senators starting Wednesday, September 7.

The mayor is set to request P50 million from Senator Sherwin Gatchalian for the construction of multi-purpose school buildings in Barangays Caohagan and Babag.

With the help of Gatchalian, a two-story building consisting six classrooms is expected to rise in Barangay Caohagan and four-story buildings with 12 classrooms in Barangay Babag.

“Whereas, Lapu-Lapu City Government has limited resources to undertake the construction of new school buildings as the City is focusing on the repair and rehabilitation of existing government facilities that were destroyed and damaged by Super Typhoon Odette,” read the common provision of the resolutions.

Chan will also ask Senator Ronald dela Rosa for a P20-million fund for the road asphalting inside the Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base.

The mayor will also request for a P40-million fund from Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go for the construction of the diversion road from Sudtunggan-Basak to Barangay Gabi in Cordova town, as they aim to ease the traffic situation along the main road in Barangay Basak.

As for the improvement of Washington road and drainage rehabilitation in George Tampus road, both of which are located in Barangay Basak, Chan will ask for about P70-million assistance from Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara.

He is also set to ask for P10-million fund assistance from Senator Raffy Tulfo for the construction of an access road under the first Mactan-Mandaue Bridge that will serve as an alternative road.

Chan will also ask for a P35-million fund from Senator Francis Tolentino in building an evacuation center on Olango Island, which has about 50,000 residents who often suffer the most during the onslaught of typhoons.

To help in the construction of the four pedestrian skywalks along Barangay Basak main road going to Barangay Marigondon, the mayor will also ask for about P48 million from Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.

The skywalks are expected to be built on four choke points at the intersection near SM Hypermart, the intersection fronting Cebu Light Industrial Park (Clip), the intersection fronting Gaisano Grand Mall and the intersection near Marigondon Elementary School. (MKG)
