LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has welcomed the appointment of Liloan, Cebu Mayor Christina Garcia-Frasco as the country’s next Tourism secretary.

“Dako na natong garbo ug dungog nga ang napili nga Tourism secretary usa ka Cebuana (It’s our great honor and pride that the chosen Tourism secretary is a Cebuana),” the mayor told reporters who sought his reaction.

President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Press Secretary-designate Trixie Cruz-Angeles, announced the appointment of Frasco, who will succeed Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat on June 30.

Frasco was reelected mayor of Liloan in the May 9 polls.

Chan said that Frasco, being a Cebuano, understands the needs and strength of Cebu, and she knows that “tourism is Lapu-Lapu City and Cebu’s bread and butter.”

Frasco, a lawyer, is the daughter of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Helpful to Lapu-Lapu

Chan said Frasco’s stint at Tourism will help revitalize Lapu-Lapu City, and its economy and tourism industry.

Lapu-Lapu City is one of the country’s major tourist destination because of its white beaches, dive spots and pristine islands, and it just a few minutes away from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Lapu-Lapu City’s tourism industry, however, was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the restriction of international and domestic travel.

“Thousands of our tourism workers lost their jobs when city’s hotels, resorts, and island-hopping boat rides were not allowed,” said Chan.

He added that Frasco is also a friend of his wife, Lapu-Lapu City lone district Congresswoman-elect Cindi King-Chan, the former chairperson of the Tourism Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission. (PR)
