UP launches ‘bigger’ fact-checking collaboration in time for May polls

With the May 9 polls coming up, social media is rife with all kinds of information, verified or otherwise, with users unsure where facts begin and end. Hence, the University of the Philippines (UP) has announced that they are re-launching Tsek.ph, their fact-checking initiative, to include more collaborators that will help verify information and debunk “fake news” regarding the elections.

UP, the Philippines’ national university, said that Tsek.ph has grown its partnership from 11 media partners and three academic institutions in 2019, to 22 members today from academic, media, and civil society institutions.

These partners “have agreed to collaborate to provide the public with truthful and factual information regarding the elections by debunking false and misleading narratives from public figures, news media, and social media,” UP said in a statement.

Tsek.ph’s academic partners include the Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Trinity University of Asia Communication Department, University of the Philippines Los Baños, UP Department of Journalism’s Fact Check Patrol and FactRakers, and the University of Santo Tomas.

Its media collaborators include ABS-CBN, DZUP, FYT, Interaksyon, MindaNews, PhilStar Global, Philippine Press Institute, Press One, Rappler, and VERA Files. Civil society partners are Akademiya at Bayan Kontra Disimpormasyon at Dayaan (ABKD), BarangayHub, and Fact Check Philippines.

The fact-checking initiative is a project of the university’s Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs, and is spearheaded by the Department of Journalism under the College of Mass Communication.
