PROMISING featherweight prospect Criztian Pitt Laurente proved that he’s ready for the next level after beating one-time world title challenger Ernesto Saulong by unanimous decision in the main event of Gerrypens Promotions’ “Suntok Laban Sa Covid-19” boxing event on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at the Biñan Football Stadium in Biñan City.
Laurente displayed his slick boxing skills in the eight-round bout and got the nod of all three judges with scores of 77-75, 77-75 and 78-74.
Laurente used the ring well with his impressive footwork. He also defended Saulong’s aggressive attack the whole fight by either countering and slipping out or clinching.
The 21-year-old former amateur standout’s best punch was in the sixth after he caught Saulong with a left straight that buckled his knees.
“He gained huge experience in this fight. But he still needs a lot to improve like his killer instinct,” Laurente’s promoter, two-division world champion Gerry Peñalosa, told SunStar Cebu. “He’s defense was good but he still lacked a lot on offense.”
Laurente remained unbeaten and improved to 6-0 with three knockouts, while Saulong, the former World Boxing Council International bantamweight champion, dropped to 22-7-2 with nine knockouts.
Peñalosa said that he plans to have Laurente fight for a regional title in his next fight against an opponent that should give him a run for his money.
“I’m going to let Pitt fight an opponent that will give him a hard time in his next fight,” he said.
In the undercard, Kenneth Llover (2-0, 2 KOs) destroyed Jemark Arusa (0-1) in one round, while Harry Omac (4-0, 2 KOs) knocked out Mike Grondiano (0-1) in the opening round. (EKA)
