FRONTRUNNERS Erco Bro and Makoto FC face off in a crucial match that could determine the champion this early in the Men’s Open Division 1 of the AboitizLand Football Cup at the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Sunday, March 8, 2020.
Both Erco Bro and Makoto are undefeated with the comebacking Erco at the No. 1 spot with 10 points on a 3-win, 1-loss record. On the other hand, Makoto FC is second with nine points at 3-0, while defending champion Leylam is at third place at seven points on two wins and a draw.
A win by Erco Bro against Makoto will put it closer to the title with a possible 13 points of 15 in its first five matches with a game left to play against the University of Cebu. On the other hand, Makoto FC, which won the Men’s Open title of the Sinulog Cup, will overtake Erco at the top spot if it wins its encounter and at 4-0, will have two more games left to play in the six-team Division 1.
Makoto FC beat Don Sacredale, 4-0, in its debut and had easy forfeit wins over the University of San Carlos and the University of San Jose-Recoletos in its next two matches to cruise to the second spot without breaking a sweat.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Leylam will try to build on its morale-boosting 6-1 win over the University of Cebu when it takes on the struggling Don Sacredale also on Sunday. Leylam, whose 5-1 win over USC benefited the rest of the division as it was the score given to the other teams when USC pulled out, needs to win all its remaining matches to have a chance to keep the title. And the odds will be in its favor as Don Sacredale hasn’t won since its 3-2 win against USJ-R in its debut.
In the first game on Sunday, UC is hoping to recover from its heavy defeat against Leylam when it takes on USJ-R. UC won its first two games before losing to Leylam and is at fourth place with six points. (PR)
