At least 1 dead, massive structural damages reported after Davao del Sur quake

MANILA, Philippines – The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Mindanao region on Sunday (December 15) has caused massive damages in different municipalities and cities, according to the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC)

As of press time, a six-year-old girl from Barangay Asinan in the town of Matanao was the first reported casualty in the earthquake.

The girl was inside the house when it collapsed.

Several others who were injured were seen outside the Padada Public Market in Davao del Sur after the structure’s wall collapsed.

They were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital for checkup.

Meanwhile, the three-storey Southern Trade Commercial building in Kapatagan, Davao del Sur was totally damaged, according to NDRRMC report.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing for possible individuals trapped inside the rubbles.

According to NDRRMC Spokesperson Mark Timbal, they are still waiting for the assessment report of their personnel on the ground but as of Monday morning (December 15), a total of 315 houses suffered partial damage in the town of Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.

Meanwhile, nine public facilities across the region were partially damaged, according to Timbal.

These include the Hagonoy National HIghschool, the Municipal hall and the Sanguniang Kabataan building in Hagonoy; the police station and the Nadila Elementary school in the town of Kiblawan; the barangay hall in Barangay Poblacion in Matanao; the municipal police station and Maria Cleta Highschool in the town of Padada.

Meanwhile, the municipal hall of Magsaysay town was totally damaged, according to Timbal.

Timbal said a total of 179 aftershocks were recorded; 32 of which were plotted and 10 were felt.

The official advised residents in affected areas to stay outdoor as more aftershocks are expected.

“May mga designated evacuation areas, mga open spaces sa lahat ng mga municipality and cities, (There are designated evacuation areas, open spaces in all municipalities,)” Timbal said.

“Ang ating pong advise sa ating mga kababayan duon po sila dumiretso para duon po sila makatanggap ng mga relief support sa ating local government, (We advise our kababayans to go there in the designated areas where they can receive relief support from our local government,)” he added. – MNP (with details from Marisol Montaño)
