Leni Robredo: No to politics, yes to judiciary?

Lawyer Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo, widow of the late Local Government secretary Jesse Robredo, has rejected calls to enter politics but she may yet find herself in public service if she is appointed as a judge in Bicol.

Jose Mejia who represents the academe on the Judicial and Bar Council told reporters that Robredo was included in the short list of applicants qualified for vacant courts in Bicol. Among the courts Robredo has been shortlisted for are Ligao City Regional Trial Court Branch 13 in Albay, Pili RTC Branch 32 and Calabanga RTC Branch 63 in Camarines Sur, and Daet RTC Branch 40 in Camarines Norte.

Mejia, citing JBC records, said Robredo applied for the positions in March and had to go through the regular process of psychological screening and public interview to qualify for the shortlist.

Under the Judiciary Reorganization Act of 1980, applicants for Regional Trial Court judge should be natural-born Filipinos, should be at least 35 years old, and has either been a practicing lawyer "or has held a public office in the Philippines requiring admission to the practice of law as an indispensable requisite" for at least 10 years.

Under the Constitution, the President can appoint judges and justices from a short list of at least three nominees provided by the JBC.

Robredo has recently been a household name, following the strength she showed during the tragic end of her husband, Jesse.
