After Leni visit, Ace Durano still mum on presidential bet

TWO and a half weeks before election day, Cebu gubernatorial candidate Joseph Felix Mari “Ace” Durano has still not announced whom he will support for the presidency in the May 9 elections but said he will do so soon.

Durano told SunStar Cebu that he is currently in talks with his party, Partido Pilipino sa Pagbabago (PPP), of which he is the chairman in Central Visayas.

PPP has already endorsed vice presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio but has not yet decided on who to support for the presidency.

“Sa tinud-anay lang (To tell you the truth), I’m in discussion karon (now) with PPP kay ang (because the) PPP gud wa man gud gihapoy (still does not have an) official candidate for president. Mao na nga nagsige kog discuss nila nga kon mahimo kon wa gyud silay i-endorse nga presidente, hatagan ko nila’g authority nga ako, mo endorse lang ko,” Durano said. (That’s why I’ve been discussing with them that if they really won’t endorse anyone for president, they’ll just give me the authority to make my own endorsement.)

“Hapit na gyud. Dili lang ko moingon kanus-a basta kay nagkaduol naman ang election day, hapit na gyud,” he added. (Soon. I just won’t say when, but since election day is nearing, it will be soon.)

Durano was present during the courtesy visit of Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo to Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III at the City Hall on Thursday, April 21, 2022.

Robredo was accompanied by reelectionist Cebu Vice Governor Hilario Davide III, who has been a constant supporter of Robredo, former vice governor Agnes Magpale, and Magpale’s younger brother Joselito Almendras.

When asked if he was considering Robredo to be his president, the gubernatorial candidate answered safely, saying, “I’m considering all.”

Durano said they had only a social conversation with the presidential candidate in terms of the latter’s trips and campaign.

He said they were just happy that the tandem of Robredo and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan decided to hold a rally called Danao People’s Rally in the city for their supporters who could not go to Mandaue City, where their second grand rally in Cebu would be held later in the day, to see and interact with them as well.

“Wala gyud, mao ra gyud to. It was just really murag kanang mga higala lang ba. Nag-catch up nag stroyahay lang kumusta ang dagan... There was no serious gyud nga giistoryaan,” Durano stressed. (There was no serious discussion. Just catching up on things.)

Meanwhile, Mayor Durano said they just welcomed Robredo, telling her that it was an honor and pleasure to receive her in the city.

The mayor also clarified that Barug Alang sa Kauswagan ng Demokrasya (Bakud), a political party in the fifth district of Cebu, of which he is the chairman emeritus, will still support former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in his bid for the presidency.

“Yung stand ng Bakud party, the district party, our support is friendship beyond politics,” he said.

This despite the endorsement of Cebu’s ruling party, One Cebu, of Marcos and Duterte-Carpio, whom they support.

Ace, Mayor Durano’s son, is challenging One Cebu’s leader, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, for the post of governor in the elections.

When asked for comment, the mayor said it was One Cebu’s political choice.

“Regarding Ace, we will respect whatever decision he will make,” Mayor Durano added. (MKG)
