When he's not busy posing naked behind a curtain, Liam Payne (formerly of One Direction, currently of solo star status) has been getting real about fatherhood and his current relationship with ex, Cheryl Tweedy (yep, she's reverted back to her maiden name). Namely, by talking honestly about how becoming a father at 23 years old was a pretty tough thing to experience.

"Becoming a dad at such a young age, it’s such a difficult thing. I think I built fatherhood up so much in my head that it kind of messed me up to start with," he explained, when discussing something a lot of men probably feel when becoming a parent for the first time. "I started in a bad place with it. I think it spooked me out early on, and I was just worried I would not be enough to look after the both of them."

Liam delved into his history as part of a new programme, Ant Middleton and Liam Payne: Straight Talking, which sees him travel to Southern Africa for the trip of a lifetime. While there, he also spoke about how Cheryl, as his baby mama, is still one of "the most important people" in his life.

"Even though we’re not together, Cheryl’s always there for me. I’m lucky I have someone who understands what I’m going through," he said, before admitting that he could have been more understanding of her feelings while they were together. "The one thing I was missing as a man in the relationship I had, was a level understanding about what she was feeling about stuff."

"I think I learnt through being away that, while I want to protect her, there’s a big part of her that wants to protect me." It's also been reported that in the footage, made before he got together with new girlfriend model Maya Henry, Liam says that he wouldn't rule out reuniting with Cheryl. *Gasps*

Cheryl has also spoken out about their split in the past too, saying there's no worse feeling than a break-up.
