LTO 7 chief suggests to revoke license of ‘hit-and-run’ driver

Land Transportation Office Central Visayas (LTO 7) Director Victor Caindec has recommended the revocation of the license of a driver who hit a 13-year-old student in a pedestrian lane in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

“I am inclined to recommend the revocation of his driver’s license based on the traffic records of the driver,” the LTO regional head said after finding out that Dario Lebito, driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV), had eight other previous traffic violations.

Caindec said Lebito, who hails from Bohol but currently resides in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City, got his driver’s license in Luzon.

Under Section 27 of Republic Act (RA) 4136, only the LTO chief can suspend or revoke the driver’s license.

Based on a CCTV footage that later went viral on social media, the student who was on his way to Basak Night High School was crossing the pedestrian lane in the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 14, 2022 when hit by Lebito.

Lebito, a family driver, 34, surrendered to the police two days after the alleged hit-and-run incident on Wednesday, November 16.

Maj. Karen Bancoleta, chief of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Station 4, told SunStar Cebu that Lebito apologized to the victim’s mother identified as Cherry Mae Fuentes Pelayo when they met and had a chance to talk at the police station in the evening.

Lebito had told police that he checked on the child before leaving the scene, asking if the latter was alright after he was hit.

Lebito alleged that the student replied that he was okay, and so he left.

Bancoleta told Lebito that he had the responsibility to make sure that the kid was okay as well as report the incident to the nearest law enforcer or police station.

Meanwhile, Pelayo will push though with the filing of charges against Lebito for reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury and Section 55 of RA 4136, said Bancoleta.

Pelayo claimed that after the incident, her son has been experiencing pain in his neck.

Bancoleta said they are awaiting the medical results of the student which will be attached to the filing of cases against Lebito. (PAC, MKG / TPT)
