Lugar Receives Order Of Lakandula

President Benigno S. Aquino III has conferred on United States Senator Richard Lugar the Order of Lakandula for his significant contributions to the enhancement of the Philippine-US alliance and friendship.

The conferment was made during the launching of the US-Philippine Society at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. He was given the rank of the Grand Collar (Supremo).

"Today, we mark the latest manifestation of this bond-the launch of the US-Philippines Society, which seeks to enhance the ties that bind our two countries. And today is also an incredibly apt and exciting time to be having this launch, as the Philippines has recovered its optimism and hope. It is also very timely that tonight I had the pleasure of conferring on Senator Lugar a well-deserved honor, the Order of Lakandula," Aquino said in his speech.

"Senator Lugar is popularly known for his principled and consistent support for Philippine freedom, democracy, the peace process, and the strengthening of Philippine defense capabilities," he said.

According to Wikipedia, "The Order of Lakandula is one of the highest honors given by the Republic of the Philippines to a Filipino or foreign citizen.

"It is an order of political and civic merit, awarded in memory of Lakandula's dedication to the responsibilities of leadership, prudence, fortitude, courage and resolve in the service of one's people."
