Magnitude 5.2 quake jolts parts of Visayas

MANILA, Philippines – (Update) A magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolted parts of Visayas on Friday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the quake, with a tectonic origin, occurred at 1:31 p.m. Its epicenter was traced 32 kilometers southwest of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

The temblor has a depth of 21 kilometers. It was felt as intensity 4 in Guiuan, Mercedes, Lawaan, Hernani and Salcedo in Eastern Samar;

Intensity 3 in Tacloban City, Palo, Babatngon, Dulag, Abuyog, Hilongos, Bato and Tolosa in Leyte; San Francisco in Southern Leyte, Borongan and Maydolong in Eastern Sama;

Intensity 2 in Pastrana, Leyte; San Julian, Eastern Samar; Maasin City, Bontoc, Libagon and Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte.

Instrumental Intensities were also reported in the following areas:

  • Intensity IV – Borongan City
  • Intensity III – Palo, Leyte
  • Intensity II – Surigao City
  • Intensity I – Ormoc City; Gingoog City

Phivolcs said there were no reported damage bit aftershocks should be expected.

Last month, parts of Mindanao were hit by strong earthquakes that killed more than 20 people and left thousands of families homeless.
