THE Magnolia Hoshots kept their hot streak going as they defeated the NorthPort Batang Pier, 83-76, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Sunday, November 8, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.
The win was the Hotshots’ fifth in a row to place their win-loss record at 6-4. It also kept them in the thick of the hunt for one of the top four spots that has a twice-to-beat bonus attached to it in the quarterfinals.
Ranged against a NorthPort squad that already is eliminated from playoff contention, Magnolia asserted itself early and led by as much as 20 points before the Batang Pier made a stirring comeback and pulled to within four, 76-80, after a three-pointer by Kevin Ferrer with 2:56 left.
However, Magnolia’s crafty big man Ian Sangalang stepped up and scored inside before adding a free-throw to secure the victory for the Hotshots.
The left-handed forward from San Sebastian finished with 23 points and nine rebounds while Paul Lee added 14 points, six boards and eight assists.
Jackson Corpuz, Aris Dionisio and Rome dela Rosa scored 10 points each for Magnolia.
Christian Standhardinger and Ferrer scored 18 points each for NorthPort, which dropped to 1-8.
