PAUL Lee was once again lethal in the clutch as he scored two straight jumpers to lift the Magnolia Hotshots past the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 70-62, in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup on Saturday, November 7, at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Pampanga.

The win, which was Magnolia’s fourth in a row, boosted their win-loss record to 5-4. On the other hand, Rain or Shine lost their third game in a row to fall to 4-4.

The Hotshots led by as much 20 but Rain or Shine clawed their way back to within one, 61-62, after two free-throws by Elasto Painters big man Jewel Ponferrada, with 3:28 left in the game.

Baskets by Ian Sangalang and Jio Jalalon gave Magnolia a 66-61 cushion but Rain or Shine would not go away and were within four, 62-66, after Rey Nambatac split his free-throws. Lee, though, was not fazed as he sank back-to-back fadeaways from left corner to seal the victory for Magnolia.

Lee’s heroics capped off another fantastic outing by the University of the East product as he tallied 31 points and five rebounds. Sangalang was the only other player to score in double-figures for the Hotshots with 14.

Rain or Shine, which sputtered in the second quarter where they scored a measly five points, got 14 from reserve guard Kris Rosales and 13 from Ponferrada. (JNP)
