Major P70-M Tourism-Oriented Project In Iloilo Formally Opened

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo - The P70-million Iloilo Esplanade overlooking the Iloilo River was formally opened yesterday, Saturday.

Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon and boxing icon Manny Pacquiao led the inauguration of the 1.2-kilometer Esplanade.

"This is a new destination for tourist and local residents, as well as families and friends who want to relax and have more leisure time which they can enjoy together," said the Iloilo native senator who was responsible for raising funds through his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) for the river park project.

"I am optimistic that this project will boost the tourism industry in the city, but more important is the environmental awareness that will be created, in efforts to restore the beauty of our river," Drilon emphasized.

The Iloilo Esplanade is one of the major development projects implemented to revive the Iloilo and Batiano Rivers.

A public-private partnership (PPP) has been initiated since March 2011 to clean and develop the two rivers passing along Iloilo City and neighboring Oton town.

Designed by renowned Filipino architect Paulo Alcazaren, the Iloilo Esplanade, with its walkway made of bricks, is landscaped with greenery.
