Mambaling’s hammer-wielding attacker in police custody

HAMMER attacks in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City may finally come to an end with Jerry Sucayre Casio in police custody.

The 21-year-old resident of Alumnos, Barangay Basak Nicolas was arrested after he used a hammer to smash the head of 40-year-old Pelagio Abangan Marine, caretaker of the San Roque Parish in Barangay Mambaling, in the early hours of Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Marine, a native of Talibon, Bohol, was asleep in the parish when Casio killed him.

Casio was angry at the victim after the latter reprimanded him for loitering outside the church late Friday night, October 28.

After he was taken into custody, Casio confessed to the crime, saying he wasn’t thinking right because his wife had just left him and he was recently evicted from his house.

It was then that police found in his possession a wallet belonging to Jemshan Val Vhester Estuva Patiño, a 19-year-old student native to Masbate.

Casio ended up admitting that he also attacked Patiño, who was waiting for his girlfriend under the skywalk on N. Bacalso Avenue in Barangay Mambaling, on Wednesday night, October 26.

Patiño was hit in the head with a hammer, dragged by the side of the road and divested of his wallet and cellphone.

He survived the assault with a fractured skull and is currently under medical observation.

With both confessions, Major Jonathan Bethooven Taneo, Mambaling Police Station chief, considered both cases solved.

Casio, who is currently detained in the Mambaling Police Station, was already charged with murder for Marine’s death. He will also be charged with robbery with serious physical injury for the assault on Patiño. (BBT, PJB)
