SINGAPORE — A man with a prior conviction of raping his daughter in 1999 was jailed two years and nine months on Wednesday (25 August) for sexually abusing two granddaughters.
The 65-year-old man pleaded guilty to three counts of molest and one count of obtaining sexual gratification from one of the victims through exploitation and sexual communication. Another five charges – all of a sexual nature – were taken into consideration for his sentencing. One of them is for asking the younger granddaughter for sex, while the other charges were in relation to his older granddaughter.
He cannot be named to protect the victims’ identities.
One of the victims, then 16, stayed over at her grandfather’s unit in October 2019. Her grandmother, who lived there, worked night shifts. One night, the man approached the victim and kissed her on the mouth as she lay on the sofa.
The man, who worked as a cleaner, then took her hand and placed it on his genitals. He asked the girl, who was shocked and fearful, not to tell her grandmother about the incident and walked away. Afraid of her grandfather, the girl kept her silence.
In December 2019, the girl moved to her grandfather’s house after she was chased out of her own house by her mother following a quarrel. She sought refuge with her grandparents as she had nowhere else to go.
The man became her de-facto guardian. By this time, the girl’s younger sister also resided with their grandparents. At times, while both girls were at the unit, their grandfather would masturbate and walk around naked when their grandmother was absent.
In December 2019, the man was alone with the older girl when he approached her in the living room. He asked her to perform a sexual act on him and kissed her on the mouth. He also molested her.
The victim could no longer keep the incidents a secret and confided in her aunt in January last year. The aunt informed the victim’s mother and grandmother.
The grandmother scolded the man, who apologised and promised not to reoffend. However, he returned to his old ways.
On 12 March last year, while the man and his older granddaughter were alone in the unit, he showed her pornography and molested her.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chee Ee Ling told the court that the man had been convicted in court of rape, molest, and carnal intercourse against nature in 1999. These involved his own daughter, then 14, and her friend, then 13. Another 81 charges, almost all of a sexual nature, were also taken into consideration for his sentencing then. He was jailed 12 years and given 12 strokes of the cane.
The prosecution sought 34 to 36 months’ jail, with an additional three months’ jail in lieu of six strokes of the cane. The man cannot be caned as he is above 50.
DPP Chee pointed out that the man had targeted his daughter in his past offences, before preying on his granddaughters. This showed the man’s tendency to take advantage of his family members who relied on him.
The man’s lawyer sought leniency for the man on account of his diabetes and a heart condition.
