Man stabs male lover, mother to death on New Year’s Eve

A MAN and his mother died after they were stabbed by the former’s lover in Villa Leyson, Barangay Bacayan, Cebu City around 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2022.

Alain Paul Englis was declared dead at 8:33 p.m. after he was brought to the Cebu North General Hospital in Talamban on the same day.

Englis’ mother, Emma, died on Monday dawn, January 2, 2023, while being admitted at the same hospital.

Alain died after sustaining several stab wounds on his body while his mother sustained severe wound on her head and a cut on one of her ears.

Master Sergeant Arniel Gabucan of the Talamban Police Station in Cebu City told reporters that the suspect, identified as Jumbe Capin Olarita, 27, is now in police custody.

Alain’s younger sister Renalyn Omangay told reporters that based on accounts from her relatives, her brother and Olarita were reportedly arguing at 6 p.m. on December 31. Police later confirmed that the victim and suspect were living as lovers.

Prior to their argument, the family’s driver witnessed Olarita blocked Alain as the latter was driving his motorcycle to work.

"Ang among drayber wala lang baleha silang duha kay namat-an naman gud na sa among mga silingan nga halos kada adlaw na sila mag-away, permi na sila mag away sa una hangtud karon mag-sinakitay mag-sinumbagay, so mao to 31 sa December wala nako damha nga ingon niana ang mahitabo," Omangay said.

(Our driver didn't mind them because our neighbors have noticed that they fight almost every day. They are always fighting until now, hurting and exchanging blows with each other. So on the 31st of December I didn't expect something like that to happen).

Omangay saud she received a call from her mother an hour before the incident but was not able to answer the phone.

At past 7 p.m., she said her neighbor chatted her that her brother and mother were brought to the hospital.

She then called her sister living in JM Basa Street in Cebu City, who told her that they were going to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) to check if her brother and mother were admitted there.

"Akong gitawagan akong ate nga naa sa JM Basa ug akong gitawagan and I was so shocked nga niana sila nga padulong mi sa ospital. Unang hospital ilang giadtoan is CCMC, but then wala didto mao nang milahos dayon sila sa Northgen," Omangay said.

(I called my sister who is in JM Basa and I was so shocked when they told me that they were going to the hospital. They first went to CCMC but they were not there so they immediately proceeded to Northgen).

Love potion

While in detention, Olarita claimed to police that he was allegedly hypnotized by the victim so that he would remain his lover.

Olarita claimed that Alain may have fed him a “lumay” or love potion as the former couldn’t dare leave the victim despite his anger with the latter.

According to Gabucan, the two were often seen quarreling with each other frequently but would settle their differences after. (BBT, TPT)
