Mandaue City suspends construction of collapsed warehouse

THE Office of the City Engineer in Mandaue City issued a suspension order on the construction of a warehouse in Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City whose wall collapsed Wednesday morning, June 22, 2022.

Engr. Crystal Comon, acting building official, said the suspension of the building's operation would be effective Friday, June 24.

She said they told the building administrators to demolish and reconstruct the damaged parts or, if possible, the entire building, to ensure safety.

The wall of the building on V. Albaño Street, Sitio Sugar Valley, Barangay Maguikay collapsed on June 22, 2022, but no one was hurt in the incident.

Comon said the demolition must be immediate, as some portions of the road near the site have been rendered impassable due to the debris.

She said the building administrators have a permit to construct a warehouse-type building and it was issued to them in July 2021.

She confirmed, though, that based on investigation, the heavy rains on June 22 and faulty construction methodology are some of the causes for the collapse.

The city engineers who examined the area on Wednesday, right after the incident, found out that some of the building's construction procedures failed to adhere to standard processes as stated in the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP), Comon said.

They also pointed out the building's location being in an area of low elevation where the water could have been accumulated, causing the soil to loosen its compactivity.

"It was a blessing in disguise that the collapse headed inwards. If it could have been outwards, bigger damages, even casualties might have happened," said Comon.

Comon said they are unable to identify the engineers and the contractor of the building, as they never showed up during the site inspection.

She said, though, that a certain "Mr. Tan," the owner of the building, already coordinated with them and expressed his willingness to conduct the prompt demolition of the property.
