MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes has tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Cortes disclosed his condition on his official Facebook page after the result of his Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) swab come out positive Monday afternoon, April 5, 2021.
In his post, he said he experienced Covid-19 symptoms like fever and sore throat on Sunday, April 4, which prompted him and his wife Sarah to get tested. His wife’s result came back negative.
John Eddu Ibañez, Cortes’ executive secretary, said only the mayor displayed symptoms. The rest of his family are okay, he said.
Ibañez said that although Cortes has recovered from his symptoms, he is currently quarantined in his house.
Ibañez said they’ve started contact tracing, first with members of the mayor’s family and household.
Since Cortes was last at City Hall on March 31, there is no need to lock it down, he said. It will be “business as usual,” he added.
Ibañez encouraged the public to follow minimum health protocol at all times.
Cortes is the 12th mayor in Cebu to test positive for Covid-19. The others are Daanbantayan Mayor Sun Shimura, Barili Mayor Marlon Garcia, Tuburan Mayor Danilo Diamante, Asturias Mayor Antonio Pintor, Alcoy Mayor Michael Angelo Sestoso, San Fernando Mayor Lakambini Reluya, Ginatilan Mayor Dean Michael Singco, Oslob Mayor Jose Tumulak, Dalaguete Mayor Jeffrey Belciña, Cebu Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard Chan.
