TEAM Mandaue thumped the Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 82-53, in the Under-18 Division 1 of the MVP Sports Foundation Youth Basketball League-Cebu at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu in Mandaue City last Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020.
With the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association tournament set for next month, the team, which is composed of players from Ateneo de Cebu, is using this tournament to prepare itself for the battles that lie ahead. Mandaue pulled away from CIT-U in the second period, thanks to a 29-13 blast that turned a five-point lead, 22-17, into a huge 21-point advantage, 51-30, at halftime.
Things got worse for CIT-U as Team Mandaue raised its lead to a high of 29 before cruising to the easy win. Jhoernel Tangkay, the son of Cebuano basketball great Jojo Tangkay, led the winning side with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Aldrich Alvez added 13, while Joey Villamayor tallied 12 points, seven boards and four steals.
In the other games in the same division, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Juniors routed the University of the Visayas Mandaue, 88-39. Uri Avila set the net on fire with his 30 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead Ateneo de Cebu to the overwhelming win.
Adarna also won over Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology, 44-42. Carl Batiquin scored 22 points to lead Adarna to the thrilling win.
Meanwhile, in the Under-15 Division 1, Developmental Basketball Pardo won over D’ Rabens, 42-39.
