THE Cebu-Casino Ethyl Alcohol will not be getting just one former UAAP player but two as University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons guard Jaybie Mantilla will also be making his return to the team when they take on the dangerous General Santos Warriors in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season at the Aznar Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019.
Mantilla played for the Cebu Sharks immediately after graduating from the University of San Jose-Recoletos. However, he was recruited by UP for a one-and-done season earlier this year.
Ironically, he would now be playing alongside a member of the team that ousted the Fighting Maroons from the Final Four this season — Zachy Huang of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers — who joined the Cebu squad this week.
Mantilla, in a talk with SunStar Cebu, said he is eager to rejoin the team and apply whatever lessons he gleaned from his season with UP.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to play for Cebu once again. I am eager to play in front of the Cebuanos and apply whatever lessons I learned from my season with UP,” said the spitfire guard.
Mantilla is joining a Cebu team that is hoping to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth. With a 9-12 win-loss record, Mantilla believes they can still pull this off.
“I think we can do this especially if we just follow the instructions of our coach and play as a team. I am confident that we would be able to do this.” (JNP)
